world, for me at least, is to be sitting on a beach that's completely empty, save
a few of my good friends, with an acoustic guitar and a cooler full of beers.
Whenever I get a chance to do that, I suddenly gain all sorts of interest in
certain summer-like things. Cruising in my car with the windows down (getting looks from everyone
so long as I have recently washed it), listening to some kind of upbeat rock,
electronic, and/or reggae CD (now you see our influence), the prospect of a sweet new tattoo which
will never pan out because of indecisiveness and lack of funds...these are all things
that make summer a summer for me. Now, Fall in upstate NY. It's definitely nice, as long as the snow holds off. A nice warm hoody, some metal, beef jerky, and a couple of 40s. That's what my fall usually consists of. Winter is full of holidays, and that puts a damper on the musical innovations for me. Spring, however, is rejuvenation. Snow melts, trees start budding, it's a time for us to wake up and start living again. This is when I start breaking out all my favorite punk albums. Despite their dismal sound, they offer such a feeling of hope and motivation to start creating again. Now, why did I just ramble about all that? Well, we started recording "Buzz," "Dive," and "This Hesitation" around October/November of 2004. That was our focus as a collaborative effort. The hardcore sound was fun and what we wanted to do for an album. Because of the holidays, though, and our easy distraction by various forms of booze, A. Dub and I stopped writing after those songs. Now, it wasn't until I had already moved to Buffalo that we started to write again, sending large uncompressed sound files back and forth over the internet. Once all the parts were recorded, I would take them into my studio and do all the mixing and post production, adding things like samples, scratches, and basslines myself once everything was largely arranged. The point, though, is that while this CD might seem to be all over the place in regards to genre, there is a reason for all that. We didn't want to contrive an album just to get one out and have all the songs sound the same. We recorded what we felt at the time, and put it all together on this release. There are inconsistencies, mistakes, and weird little conversations that were all left in there to make the album more interesting, and give you a view of who we really are. We have no desire to hide behind vocal processors and million dollar recording budgets. Well, maybe the budgets... ---Dev |
